[Milliways infirmary]

Several days later, the good hurt of a decent workout morphs into true pain. It wakes Gaeta up in the middle of the night; terrified, not fully cognizant, he thinks oh, gods, it's come back. He makes it through a verse and a half of song, each word whispered with the fervency of prayer, before realizing what it must be.

One leg has been assisted by crutches for that year, and the other has borne no weight at all.

Of course it's going to hurt.

The pain's enough that he briefly -- but seriously -- considers finding a wheelchair once morning comes around. Instead, achy and limping, he makes his way down to the infirmary under his own power.

Dr. Tam is there, working on calibrating the new diagnostic imager.

He glances up when Gaeta enters, and gives a quick smile. "Felix. I'll be right with you, just let me shut this down ..."

The slightly breathless sound of his voice gets another quick glance, and a nod at the nearest patient examination cot. "If you'd like to have a seat? I'll be just a moment."

Simon finishes the calibration he's working on, tests it quickly to make sure it's within spec, and sets the machine on standby before starting in Gaeta's direction.

"Good to see you," he says by way of a greeting. "How are you feeling? -- Is that the new prosthesis?"
simon_doctor: (pleased)

"I think so," he says slowly. "The name's familiar."

And smiling back, he adds "I take it you're pleased with it?"

"I'm glad to hear it."

And he is, genuinely, even though that means he can guess what brings Gaeta to the infirmary. A comfortable prosthesis, when he's been without one for quite some time, must have been an invitation to overdo it.

"So," since there's no point in guessing, "what can I do for you?"

"I see." To his credit, he doesn't say anything critical or reproachful. "Do you want me to take a look?"

"Of course. Give me one moment?"

This is one of the things the diagnostic imager is good for, actually; he heads back to retrieve it, and a few other items.

"If you want to sit back, or lie down, so we can get a clear scan ..."

The scanning itself doesn't take long, and he's able to bring up an image of non-atrophied leg muscles for side-by-side visual comparison.

"I'm afraid so." Sober. "That's what your leg muscles look like right now, compared to a healthy leg. The good news is, there's no reason that difference should be permanent."
simon_doctor: (businesslike doctor)

[personal profile] simon_doctor 2014-02-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Well," and he shuts down the scanner as he speaks, "I can put together an updated physical therapy regimen for you. And -- there's a treatment I can prescribe that helps build up atrophied muscle mass, in conjunction with exercise."
simon_doctor: (pensive)

[personal profile] simon_doctor 2014-02-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Gentle, and the smallest bit dry: "You have had a good few other things on your mind, as I recall."

A beat, and he adds "Which is to say, other parts of yourself you needed to take care of first. That's not something you need to apologize for."

He tilts his head, in a gesture something like a shrug. "Not really. It's going to be pretty much the same work, just a little later. And as I said, the good news is that there doesn't seem to be any lasting damage."

(He has the feeling that last point could do with some emphasizing.)

"Probably a good deal of the time," he says. "There are some exercises where it might get in the way, but for others it could even be helpful. Try each one and see."
